Agribusiness Management
Historical background of the department
Sequel to the approval of the Agribusiness Management (ABM) Department by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in December 2022, the department was officially inaugurated in February 2023 with both administrative and academic activities were commenced earnestly with twelve pioneer students in the 2022/22023 academic session. The department is being managed with fifteen seasoned lecturers/technologists under the headship of Dr I.O Oyewo.
Goal and Objectives of the programme:
The goal of the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Agribusiness Management programme is to produce diplomates with theoretical and practical knowledge to efficiently carry out management of agricultural business enterprise at middle level in public service, industry and as entrepreneur.
Prepare diplomates for careers in the nation’s growing agribusiness sectors which provides products and services in the agricultural value chain for the production, processing and distribution of food and fiber.
On completion of the programme, the diplomates should be able to:
• Apply basic concepts and principles of economics to decision making in a business environment.
• Apply the basic concept of value chain analysis to promote value addition for maximum returns on agricultural investments.
• Apply professional and entrepreneurial skills for self-economic empowerment and the nation in general.
• Understanding legal principles and procedures that govern business operations.
• Carry our purchasing and marketing tasks effectively.
• Prepare budget plan and accounting for business transactions.
• Understand the unique institutional and managerial challenges facing agribusiness firms.
• Be able to integrate business management principles with technical knowledge for decision making in agribusiness enterprises.
Applicants with all the following qualification may be considered for admission into the Higher National Diploma programme by;
1. The minimum entry requirement for National Diploma in any agricultural programme.
2. The National Diploma with a minimum of lower credit pass in any agricultural programme.
3. A minimum of one year post National Diploma cognate work experience.
4.0 PROGRAMME DURATION:
The HND programme runs for two academic sessions of two semesters each (four semester),
5.1 The curriculum is structured into four semesters of classroom, studio, laboratories, and other field activities. Each semester of educational based activities shall be for a duration of 17 weeks distributed as follows:
(i) 15 contact weeks of teaching i.e. theory, practical, exercises, quizzes, tests, etc.: and
(ii) 2 weeks for examination and registration.
5.2 The curriculum of the programme consists of four main components via:
(i) General Studies Courses
(ii) Foundation Courses
(iii) Professional Courses
(iv) Supervised Courses
The General Studies components includes courses in General Sciences, English Language/Communication, Entrepreneurship Development and Computer Studies.
THE PROFILE OF THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
Isaac O. Jerry Oyewo, PhD, FIIHP, LFAN
was born in Lagos State, Nigeria. He was admitted to the department of AgriBusiness and Rural Development, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria where he graduated with B.Tech (Hons) Agricultural Economics and Extension, M.Tech (Hons) Agricultural Economics, PhD in Agricultural Economics and a Fellow of the Institute of Intrapreneurship Management and Human Resource Development and Professionals (FIIHP). He had his secondary and primary education in Ojota secondary school Lagos and GRA primary school, Ogudu Ojota Lagos State respectively and had his one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Jos, with Plateau State Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (PRUWATSAN). He started his academic carrier with Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso in the year 2006, pioneer member of academic staff of Best Legacy College of Education (BELCOED). Presently; he is a Senior Lecturer/ Principal Research Fellow and the pioneer Head of Department of Agribusiness Management at the Federal College of Forestry of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), Federal Ministry of Environments (FME) Nigeria. He teaches and conducts research in his field of specialty which includes Agricultural Production Economics, Agricultural Resource and Environmental Economics, Econometrics, Farm Management, Statistics among others for over 15 years. Data analyst, skillful in STATA, Excel, Frontier, SPSS, Eview, Fuzzy Logic, Bayis X, Microfit, Microsoft etcetera. His PhD thesis was centered on sustainable land management using Fuzzy logic to analyse multidimensional indicators of unsustainable land use and marginal effect on cassava farmers’ productivity; Technical efficiency in maize farmers’ productivity using Frontier. He has published over 60 articles in various reputable national and international journals, over 20 conference proceedings, 3 books, 10 technical papers, attended several national and international conferences and seminars, and supervises over fifty project students.
He is a member of various academic and research societies such as ISDS Japan, ASN, FAN, NAAE, CFA Nigeria, Liaison / Secretary, International Society for Tropical Foresters (ISTF) Nigeria chapter.
He was a Janitor prefect in his secondary school days, a member of the Boy Scout of Nigeria; in 1998 he became the pioneer General Secretary of the Nigeria Association of Agricultural Economics students, in 1999 a member of the Student Representative Council, in the year 2000 the pioneer chief whip and 2001 the Speaker of the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Student Union Government LAUTECH; the pioneer National Social Director of the LAUTECH ALUMNI association in 2004; Chairman, Libra Advocacy for Development Organization (LIADO) an NGO, Oyo State chapter; was the General Secretary of the Oyo State chapter of the LAUTECH ALUMNI association, General Secretary International Society for Tropical Foresters and also a member of Special Marshal of Federal Road Safety Corps in Oyo State.
Dr Oyewo was awarded Certificate of Excellence in Reviewing by the Current Journal of Applied Science and Technology USA in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the quality of the Journal in 2017, Certificate of Honour in recognition of manuscript publication by the International Organization of Scientific Research in 2018, Certificate of achievement by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) in Collaboration with Research 4 life in 2019, rated as one of best among the World Scientist and University ranking Scientist in 2022 and 2023 by AD Scientific Index.
He has participated in various National and State assignments where he was appointed the Supervisory Presiding Officer (SPO) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the year 2015, 2019, 2020 and 2023 respectively, Returning Officer (RO) by the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) in the year 2020 and 2023 to conduct the Local Government election and also as a State Facilitator by the National Population Commission (NPC) to conduct the 2023 Population and Housing Census (PHC).
His religion life, he was a choir master, a member of the Royal Ambassadors (RA), he worn the Church Training Programme (CTP) of the Nigerian Baptist Conference sword drills at the 1993 Baptist Convention in Ekiti State where he represented the Lagos State Baptist Conference through Gideon Association Baptist conference as a 1st position winner of the bible sword drills and a Sunday school teacher.
He is a goal getter with good analytical skills who believes in getting results. Passionate, articulate and innovative team player, who has worked in various areas of work and gained exposure to numerous areas of life in both the public and private sector, he believe there is nothing that cannot be achieved with the right team, a great team builder with an enthusiastic spirit which makes him a valuable asset to any organization. All this is possible through integrity, diligence and commitment towards achieving set organizational goals while maintaining high levels of professional values and ethics.
