ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Basic Science and General Studies serves as the intellectual foundation of the Federal College of Forestry, Ibadan. The department provides essential education to students across all disciplines by delivering fundamental courses that prepare them for specialized forestry and environmental studies, also providing training in agriculture and related disciplines

This department services both full-time and part-time programmes leading to National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) qualifications, ensuring all students acquire the necessary foundational knowledge and skills.

With a dedicated team of ten science-oriented lecturers, seven laboratory scientists, five general studies specialists, with four well-equipped laboratories, the department creates a robust learning environment where theory meets practice in preparing tomorrow’s forestry and environmental professionals.

To develop well-rounded forestry professionals equipped with strong foundational knowledge in basic sciences and complementary life skills necessary for academic excellence, professional competence, and societal relevance in the global forestry and environmental sectors.

Anne .A. Tunde-Francis

Anne .A. Tunde-Francis, born in Lagos, Nigeria, is a distinguished academic with extensive experience in education and communication. She is a Senior Lecturer/Principal Research Fellow and Head of the Department of Basic Science and General Studies at the Federal College of Forestry, which operates under the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), an agency of the Federal Ministry of Environment (FME).

Tunde-Francis' academic journey began at the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A. Ed) in English Language. She furthered her education at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, where she obtained her Master of Education (M. Ed) in Adult Education with specialization in Communication Arts. With a PhD. in educational management in view. Her diverse educational background is complemented by a professional diploma in public relations.

With teaching experience spanning over two decades at various levels of education, Tunde-Francis has established herself as an authority in Language Use and Communication Arts. Her academic contributions are substantial, having published over 40 articles in reputable national and international journals, presented over 8 conference papers, and authored 6 technical papers. She is actively engaged in the academic and church communities, regularly attending conferences and seminars where she shares her expertise and insights.

As a mentor to the next generation of scholars, she has supervised numerous project students, guiding them through their research endeavors and helping them develop their academic potential. She has also been involved in organising several workshops and trainings for teenagers and young adults in her church community. Her dedication to education and communication excellence shines through in her work, while her active membership in organizations like the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), Teachers Registration council (TRCN), Association of Educational Researchers and Evaluators (ASSEREN) shows her commitment to advancing her field both nationally and internationally.
