Library

BRIEF OVERVIEW

The Federal College of Forestry Library, Ibadan, was established alongside the founding of the College in 1939 as an academic support center for training skilled manpower in Forestry, Agriculture, and Environmental Management. As one of the pioneer Forestry Institutions in West Africa, the Library played a crucial role in supporting early research and education in sustainable forestry practices, natural resource conservation, and ecological studies.

In its early years, the Library operated with a modest collection of textbooks, technical manuals, and government reports, primarily focused on forestry and related sciences. With the growth of the College and the diversification of academic programs, the library’s holdings expanded to include materials in Agriculture, Horticulture, Soil Science, Wildlife Management, and General Sciences.

By the 1980s and 1990s, the Library began subscribing to relevant academic journals, magazines, and bulletins to support emerging research needs. It also maintained a collection of technical reports and grey literature produced by staff and students, contributing to the preservation of indigenous knowledge and local studies.

In response to the digital shift in information access, the Library has gradually evolved to integrate digital resources into its services. While full automation is still in progress, efforts are ongoing to improve cataloging systems, provide access to online journals, and digitize rare and locally produced content.

Today, the Federal College of Forestry Library stands as a vital knowledge hub in the College, providing students and staff with access to physical and electronic resources, research support, and a quiet space for intellectual engagement. It remains committed to supporting the institution’s vision of excellence in forestry education, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stewardship.
