Preamble

The Research, Innovation and Intellectual Property Unit of the Federal College of Forestry, Ibadan, serves as a cornerstone for advancing scientific research, fostering creativity and promoting the protection of intellectual assets within the institution. Recognizing the critical role of research and innovation in national development, the unit was established to enhance research coordination, facilitate grant acquisition and drive knowledge-sharing initiatives. It is committed to ensuring that research outcomes are not only impactful but also effectively translated into practical solutions for the forestry and environmental sectors.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the unit is rooted in the belief that research and innovation are essential drivers of academic excellence, technological progress and socio-economic transformation. Through the promotion of intellectual property protection, sustainable research practices and capacity-building initiatives, the unit seeks to create an environment where knowledge is continuously generated, applied and shared for the benefit of society.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the Research, Innovation and Intellectual Property Unit include:

  1. Promoting a research-driven culture within the College that encourages innovation and discovery.
  2. Facilitating access to research grants, funding opportunities and collaborations with national and international research institutions.
  3. Supporting faculty and students in patenting their inventions and protecting intellectual property rights.
  4. Conducting research on emerging trends in science, technology and forestry to improve teaching, enhance practical applications as well as support community service and development.
  5. Organizing workshops, exhibitions and training programs to build the research and innovation capacity of students and faculty members.
  6. Developing a comprehensive research database for data sharing, reuse and collaboration.
  7. Preparing and reviewing grant-winning proposals to secure funding for research projects.
  8. Ensuring the proper formulation and implementation of research plans in alignment with institutional goals.
  9. Strengthening the link between academic research and industry to encourage the commercialization of innovations.

Mandate and Activities

The Research, Innovation and Intellectual Property Unit operates under the directive of the Provost and is mandated to:

  • Conduct research on grants, patents and innovative projects within the College.
  • Investigate and document recent trends in science, technology and research methodologies.
  • Provide technical support and guidance for faculty and students in research-related endeavors.
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange through training programs, workshops and exhibitions.
  • Manage and maintain a research database to enhance data accessibility and collaboration.
  • Draft and submit proposals to secure external funding for institutional research projects.
  • Develop policies and strategies for the protection and commercialization of intellectual property.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders in the forestry, environmental and scientific communities to foster innovation and technological advancement.

The Research, Innovation and Intellectual Property Unit of the Federal College of Forestry, Ibadan, remains committed to fostering a culture of research excellence and innovation. Through its various programs and initiatives, the unit continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the institution’s research landscape while ensuring that knowledge creation and intellectual property development contribute meaningfully to national and global advancements.

History of the directorate:

The Research Development and Coordination Directorate was created in January, 2025 to oversee and manage research initiatives, foster innovation, establish local and international partnership between the college and relevant organizations. The activities of the directorate will project the college as a leader in forestry and related field by projecting  student and staff research activities  to the outside community and attract investors to our novel innovative projects.

Jayeoba, Feyiropo M.

Her research integrates molecular tools with field-based ecology to understand and conserve genetic diversity in forest ecosystems. She focuses on how habitat, environmental differences and human activities affect the genetic variability and adaptation in plant population.

Jayeoba, F.M is currently running a Ph.D. in Plant Biology at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, where she is studying the population structure and genetic diversity of Irvingia species in South West Nigeria. She is also committed to training the next generation of conservation scientists in the use of genomic data for biodiversity preservation.

Research Activities:

The directorate has organized outreaches to commemorate the International day of forests and World wood day, 2025. We have also coordinated the submission and processing of Technical Reports by staff. We have also reached out to notable universities and organizations for research collaborations and written research proposals for funding to various organizations, some of which are yielding positive results.  With the support of the College management and our partners, we are overseeing the running and maintenance of IMO Research and Innovation Hub, a place where researchers are provided with conducive environment for studies with adequate power supply and free internet facilities.
